Alameda’s Gold Coast Neighborhood–One of the Island City’s Finest
With its expansive, elegant homes and prime location, Alameda’s small Gold Coast neighborhood is perhaps the island city’s most coveted enclave.
Location
Situated on the south-central part of the island, the Gold Coast is bordered by Central and Encinal Avenues to the north, Grand Street to the east, the Alameda Lagoon to the south, and Caroline Street to the west. The neighborhood offers easy access to downtown Oakland and Interstate 880 via the Posey Tube, but residents who prefer public transportation are within walking distance of two bus lines that offer regular service to downtown San Francisco.
A more scenic way to travel to the city is via ferry, which residents can catch on the island’s west end. Ferries depart roughly every half hour during peak commute times, and the trip to the San Francisco Ferry Building takes just 20 minutes.
Outdoor Recreation with Family-Friendly Charm
Gold Coast denizens are a short stroll away from Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach, one of the East Bay’s most scenic stretches of shoreline. The park is a popular spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding or simply soaking in the epic views of the San Francisco skyline from the 2.5-mile-long beach.
Franklin Park, located within the neighborhood’s borders, provides families with additional outdoor-recreation activities, with playgrounds, tennis courts, sports fields, and a swimming pool.
Many people are drawn to the neighborhood for its proximity to Franklin Elementary School, just across from the park. According to SchoolDigger’s 2025 rankings, Franklin Elementary continues to be a high-performing standout, placing in the 90th percentile of schools across the state.
Restaurants and Entertainment
Tucked into a primarily residential neighborhood, this location offers easy access to some of Alameda’s most popular destinations. Just minutes from Webster Street, residents can enjoy local favorites like East Ocean Seafood Restaurant for dim sum, The Bureau 510 for burgers and cocktails, along with neighborhood staples like Domenico’s Deli, Cafe Jolie, and Wescafé. The area is also centrally located between South Shore Center and Park Street, making it easy to enjoy the best shopping, dining, and entertainment Alameda has to offer. For something uniquely local, the nearby Pacific Pinball Museum offers a fun and nostalgic outing with more than 100 playable vintage machines.
Sought-After Neighborhood
Gold Coast homes are situated on peaceful, tree-lined streets that highlight the small-town vibe that many Alameda residents feel is the city’s greatest strength. Many homes in the neighborhood are large and stately and are situated on appropriately generously-sized lots.
Due to its sizable homes and high desirability, the Gold Coast is currently Alameda’s most expensive neighborhood.
